Manufacturers Group Meeting
Monday 26th January 2015 5:30 - 7:30pm
Location: Movetech, Emblem Street, Bolton, BL3 5BW
This Month's Guest Speakers:
The theme of the January meeting is supporting apprenticeships and skills in the manufacturing sector in Bolton. There will be presentations from Bolton College, Business Bolton and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce about developing a shared apprenticeship scheme across Bolton.
Bolton Manufacturers Group Apprenticeships
Whilst most companies have a source, structure and ability to engage in traditional apprenticeship schemes these are not suitable for all employers. An established alternative exists in the construction sector through the GM Chamber of Commerce Construction GTA. This shared apprenticeship scheme has proved popular in the construction sector and is now an option for the Bolton Manufacturing group.
During the course of the meeting we will be discussing the possibility of a shared Apprenticeship Scheme for SME's in the Bolton area and how this could be delivered and managed by a potential provider.
It will also be an opportunity to discuss how local manufacturing businesses can engage with local schools to promote the sector to young people prior to taking career options and the possibility of further education.
The inputs from local manufacturing businesses is essential to the future development of our young people. It would be great to see the support of our local manufacturing employers at this month's meeting.
Apprenticeships Contribution to the Economy
The UK economy is changing rapidly and, to maintain and improve growth, it must rebalance towards high-value export goods. Having a highly skilled and flexible workforce is essential to boosting business productivity, driving private sector growth and competing globally.
Apprenticeships play a key role in boosting skill levels across our economy to meet this need, and supporting people into sustainable careers. The National Audit Office estimates that adult apprenticeships alone offer a return of £18 to the economy from every £1 of public spending.
They give young people and existing workers the technical skills, knowledge and on-the-job training to get well-paid and satisfying careers. And apprentices can boost a company’s productivity by £214 a week, according to the Centre for Economy and Business Research – generating £3.4bn by 2022.
Apprenticeships enable companies to cost effectively develop the skills of their employees. Apprenticeships are still funded by the government and support is available for both young people and adults (Co-funded).
Apprentices are employed by the company, generally attending college one day a week spending the rest of the time learning ‘on the job’. Learners are assessed at college and in the workplace throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship program.Apprenticeships are ideal for new recruits and to upskill existing employees.
The Manufacturers Group Meeting Format:
· We don’t follow the format of other networking groups with a 1 minute pitch or pressure people for referrals.
· We drink tea & coffee and eat good old Pie & Peas while chatting informally.
· We are very friendly and open about improvements we have implemented; funding we have utilized, new technologies, useful suppliers and other benefits, such as, referrals to new clients that will help other attendees increase their bottom line and grow their businesses.
· We make a difference by supporting local charities.
· We are currently a combination of 50 local manufacturing businesses, which is growing rapidly month on month.
There is a £15 entry fee which is donated to a local charity each month. This month we will be welcoming the Bolton Dementia Support Group, a charity that provides a range of activities, events and resources to support people living with dementia and those who care for them.
If you would like to come along to the Manufacturers Group please contact us to arrange a guest pass. Remember you need to be a manufacturer to attend and we do not allow people to turn up on the night without prior arrangement.
